As with all things our lives are a series of ups and downs. In this case, in the life of this website, we have seen extreme ‘ups’, that of a very high number of ‘hits‘, or people/things visiting sklapsky.ca. It’s tantamount to Internet abuse.
I mentioned this in the last post, the hits are not necessarily visits by people. They are in fact ‘hits’ by other computers or software that searches the internet called ‘bots‘ or web crawlers. It has come to my attention that this is an issue I need to resolve. I’m told this by my internet host, the company that allows me to show sklapsky.ca to you. The ‘hits’ have reached the point where they are impacting the operation of the host, causing a disproportionate use of resources by sklapsky.ca over that of other users.
This is something I’ve been working on for a while, the internet host (HostPapa) called me about 2-3 weeks ago with offers to sell me additional products to allegedly help me with this problem. This/that is not something that’s in the cards for me. I’d prefer to spend some of my (limited) time in resolving it rather than the cash I don’t have.
I tell you this for two reasons. One, if this website goes down (disappears) that may be the reason why. Two, I don’t post enough here and to maintain any presence at all the frequency of writing needs to significantly improve. This may happen as a matter of course, the summer is apparently over and there will likely be more genealogical ‘stuff’ taking place and with it an increase in an internet presence. Let’s see what time holds for us, shall we.
Bottom line I’m still here, I hope you are too. Take care, and as Spock said “Live long and prosper”.
This website has seen a few ups and downs in the last few months. In reality it has not only been this site that’s presented challenges, I have also had some moments. It’s been nothing too serious mind you, just normal ups and downs, but they took my focus away. I’m here now though so that’s a plus.
As I said the site became messed up a few weeks ago. That’s a technical term for unusable. The incorrect (old) pages would come up and none of the menus worked.I was able to resolve it, with a little help from my domain hosting company HostPapa, and I got it back into a working order of sorts a week or so ago. Things proceeded slowly toward normal until I broke it again a few days ago. Thankfully I figured out what happened and fixed it within minutes. Hopefully we are good now.
I’m happy to say the Facebook group page “Sklapsky Reunion” is attracting quite a bit of attention. I had mentioned it previously in a post titled Sklapsky Reunion Facebook page. Catchy title eh? The downside is you have to belong to Facebook, I don’t say ‘belong’ lightly because that’s what happens. Ultimately you can belong to Facebook, as in they ‘own’ you. That notwithstanding I think FB has some merits and that is one of them, the ability to connect diverse groups.
As a result of that connection I have some new family friends. I’ve learned a great deal about some of the branches of our family tree and expect to learn more. Hang in there, as promised more info will come.
My sincere apologies to any who read this. For some reason my website has become corrupted and the appearance has gone into the tank. I’m not sure at this time how it came to be, nor am I sure how to get it back. In the meantime please forgive the confusion and “mess”.
I can see this is taking the shape of a blog, which is not the original intent but ok. I’ve not pursued any web updates lately as I’ve just been too busy with retired life. Sad but true.
I still want to upgrade and utilize some variety of gallery software and whether that is something provided free from my hosting site or a product I purchase I don’t know. I’ve looked at a product called jAlbum, which is promising, but there are a number of free products offered through HostPapa also. They host this site so if they seem appropriate I’d like to use one of those packages.
I can see there is still an issue with the date that displays in the top right of the page. As I look at it now it shows the 28th but it is only the 27th. It’s late on the 27th but still the 27th. I assume it’s a time zone issue and I’ll check into it.
We are off to Hawaii on Thursday, tomorrow being Wed., and we’ll leave for Kelowna tomorrow and off to Honolulu early Thursday morning. Obviously I’m not so dedicated as to do much on here in that time. I may, but who knows.
