While I’d like to keep any number of my web spaces active it becomes a touch onerous to maintain any level of consistency in my attention to each. Facebook has it’s points, Flickr is nice for some things (photos of course), Google+ is always an option (same as FB), and of course there’s the blogs and webpages I’ve started and let wither away. Oh, woe is me….
Over the years I’ve tried a few different versions of the same thing, different methods for developing a ‘web presence’, various attempts to communicate and at the same time find an outlet for the words I want to say. Too much web presence is likely not a good thing but I’ll try to control myself, and the information I present. This is as good a venue as any I’d say, so let’s try this WordPress site for a while.
I think the secret will be to be quick and dirty in my entries as they say. Keep ’em short, find something at least a little interesting, and hey… throw in a photo or two for those who don’t want to (or can’t) read. This will be my first kick at that proverbial cat.
This site won’t suddenly switch to a ‘Dwayne’s gab fest’, heaven forbid. I will still keep it as a family site and I will continue to look for family info. Perhaps I’ll make some changes to the Galleries to make them more accessible, who knows. So here goes, here’s some pics for those tired of reading.
I’m sorry to say that Sklapsky.ca is still under the weather. More accurately it’s under the ‘whether’, and that’s whether I can fix it or whether I cannot.
Likely you are receiving this email properly but if you try to access the website or login to view any private documents I suspect you cannot. If that is NOT the case please email me and let me know.
With a little luck I will be able to restore the site, with a bit more luck I can do it without losing anything. Being as this is my first experience with this sort of issue it’s anyone’s guess if I can do it or not.
My sincere apologies to any who read this. For some reason my website has become corrupted and the appearance has gone into the tank. I’m not sure at this time how it came to be, nor am I sure how to get it back. In the meantime please forgive the confusion and “mess”.
I’m blogging on the the road, well, not really ON the road but blogging from the road. We are camping, I am attempting to blog.
Given no Internet at our location, or cell service where I could tether my laptop to my phone, I am concerned about creating a post on my phone then losing it before I can send. I’ve had situations similar to this before where I create an award winning post on my phone, perhaps even insert some iphoneography, then go to make a change or two, and WHOOSH, lose the whole damn works. Frustrating to say the least!
This version of WordPress mobile seems more stable though so let’s hope all goes well. First I need to come up with something to write and then get ‘pen to paper’ and ensure whatever I write is saved. Unfortunately I won’t really know whether it worked until after I hit “send”.
As I said we are camping. We only went as far as our local Provincial Park but it’s one of my favourites so I figure how wrong can you go. In a pinch we can zip home for that last minute “need” but with our checklists and some experience under our belts how wrong can you go. So far I think we have all we need, outside of Internet for example. And let’s face it, that’s not a need at all, merely a strongly desired and well supported habit.
It’s beautiful here. I’ve always liked it at Syringa Creek Park and it is certainly one of my top picks. It may not be for everyone however. My wife relates an experience that she had a year or two ago when checking out the available sites prior to moving the trailer out. She saw a couple de-camping and asked if they happen to be moving on. They replied yes, in fact they didn’t like it here and were anxious to get out. As they relayed to my wife, “there’s too many trees”.
Now that is exactly what I like about it here, the trees, the water, the mountains. To me it’s Gods country. Yes I know God is everywhere, and this country of ours epitomizes the varied beauty, the ‘something for everyone’. I feel no shame in saying that this is my beauty, this is the type of terrain I love. If only I had Internet here.
Charles Reeves Page Additions, and sklapsky.ca updates:
There have been a few page additions and updates to the sklapsky.ca site. Most have been around the memoir of Charles Reeves, my gr gr grandfather on dad’s side. A number of additional pages have been added with more of his story and you can see the current list here. I hope to get some more photos posted soon as well.
Reading his memoir is very interesting and when I actually think about what their lives were like it back in the late 1800’s it makes me appreciate mine even more. I recently got an email from one of his daughters, Aurla, who now lives in Western Washington. She is only one of the two surviving ‘children’ of Charles and Ida.
There have also been some small changes to the site layout and formatting. Some make the site more legible (I think) and some are just for sh**s and giggles. I’m having fun learning more about not only WordPress itself but also php files, SEO (search engine optimization), and just general website administration. Something I’ve always wanted to do, and now I’m retired I have more time. Not a lot more time, but more time I choose to dedicate to the cause.
If you’re following this blurb you’ll see not much has happened. We went to Hawaii for a week or so and my time spent since then has been….well, spent.
There were pictures to deal with (all 650 of them), and although they have been taken off my camera they are not yet edited or filed. As you can imagine most are of Madden and it is still my goal to create an album on this site with all manner of family photos and stuff.
I have, since our last chat, installed WordPress onto a subdomain of this one, another domain name I’ve purchased so I don’t lose it like I did with the Sklapsky.com domain name. That was only my own procrastination that caused that particular fubar. I will endeavour to NOT commit that particular sin again.
To that end I purchased the one domain name I liked (I’m considering pros and cons of divulging the name) and am seriously thinking of buying another. Stay tuned.
At this time I’m thinking of installing WordPress on this site as well. It is a much cleaner interface and will (read that as should) minimize any mucking about I need to do in order to make this site legible. If there’s one thing I’ve learned in this process of web site building/developing it’s that no change is small and the changes all interact to make one big CF if you do something wrong.
Hang in there we’ll see. ps by the way, if you come to the site please let me know.
